Early November 2009, 4Aviation visited Greece for the second time. A group of 13 people enjoyed the open days of the Hellenic Air Force

The majority of the group gathered at Schiphol on Thursday 5 November. After a short stop-over at Zürich, the group arrived in Athens at about 13.00 to meet our fellow travellers from Germany. The two rental vans were picked up and the journey to Kalamata was started. About halfway, a short stop was made at Tripolis were we could see the preserved aircraft plus an operational Dromader. Early in the evening, the group arrived at the hotel in Kalamata.

The next morning, the group made a stop at the War Museum to see the preserved F-5 in the garden. Next stop was Kalamata air base. The static display was pretty much like previous open days, the only thing that had changed was that this year it was allowed to take pictures of the taxiing aircraft. Next up was Andravida, where a Hellenic aviation enthusiast helped us photographing the static display (by removing signs and other clutter..). A nice bonus were the two Phantoms returning from a mission, that could be photographed quite nicely. Last stop of the day was Araxos. A very small static and tight security made us decide to leave very quickly for our hotel.

Last year we tried to photograph the stored aircraft at Agrinion, but this was cancelled at the last moment. This year we were more lucky; with help of the friendly people at the base we were able to photograph anything we wanted, our main goal being the A-7s and F-104s. A very successful day for all nostalgia fans! After finishing up at Agrinion, the group headed out for Elefsis, where we were able to enjoy the static aircraft in the evening sun. Our hotel for the night was in downtown Athens.

8 November 2009

As the air bases opened their gates at 13.00 on Sunday, part of the group went looking for some Wrecks & Relics in Athens. The yearly Marathon of Athens made navigating a challenge, but we managed to visit some locations. Around 12.00 we picked up the remainder of the group and went to Dekelia-Tatoi. Local spotters told us that there would be a small aerial display, but this was cancelled at the last moment due to the weather. Nevertheless, we saw two CL415 make a flypast and two T-6s taking off. The second part of the afternoon was spent at Tanagra where we could enjoy the sun! Our hotel for the night was located in Larissa.

9 November 2009

On Monday, we started early at Larissa. The weather was rainy and cloudy but the sound of starting Phantoms made us smile anyway. During the morning, we were able to photograph quite a lot of RF-4Es and F-16s on the taxiway up until the moment that security did not allow this anymore. After a short stop at the base museum, we drove to Nea Anchialos. Security at this base was, as usual, over the top but after some discussion and contact with the headquarters we were able to photograph the static display anyway. Our last stop for the day was our hotel in Pireaus.s.
