In order to visit the airshow at Plovdiv (BIAF 2009), a group of 8 enthusiasts visited Bulgaria in May 2009.

Early morning on Friday 22 May 2009, the group gathered at Schiphol. After check-in we headed out for Sofia were we arrived late afternoon. After picking op the rental van we visited the aviation Museum in Sofia. This Museum is part of the large museum in Plovdiv and gives a good overview of the types of the Bulgarian Air Force. Although the museum was actually closed, the friendly people of the museum let us in and gave us some time to wander around. After finishing here, we drove to Plovdiv to find our hotel for the coming three nights.

On Saturday morning, we arrived early at Plovdiv-Krumovo to pick up our VIP-passes. The static show consisted of an overview of most of the types active in the Bulgarian Air Force. A view at the flightline revealed that we could expect at least a demonstration of an Su-25. The MiG-21 and MiG-29 in the flying display were to fly from their home base, Graf Ignatfievo. A lot of Mi-17s and Mi-24s could be seen behind the static on the operational part of Plovdiv-Krumovo.

Around noon the flying display of the Bulgarian Air Force started with the flypast of a Mi-17 carrying a Bulgarian Flag. After that, a Bell 206, Mi-17, Mi-24, Cougar, Su-25, MiG-21 and MiG-29 could be seen in the flying display. Although we were already very satisfied with the pictures, the Saturday show gave some insight in the best places for Sunday’s display. The Saturday evening was spent visiting the stored MiG-23 at Katsunita and the MiG-21 in Plovdiv.

On Sunday we arrived even earlier at Plovdiv, enabling us to photograph the static show without people. With the help of the ground crews we were also able to photograph the helicopters free of covers and signs. With the experiences of Saturday were able to position us a little bit better during the flying display. Time was also spent in the large Museum, adjacent to the airbase. In the meantime, we learned that the MiG-21, MiG-29 and Su-25 were to leave on Sunday. Reason enough to linger around a bit more! When most of the crowd was already gone, the fighters of the static show were towed to the flight line. It took some waiting, but in the end the departing aircraft resulted in the best pictures of the weekend! The result of the weekend was celebrated with a small beer in the hotel.
